A professional portrait is planned around its uses: a LinkedIn profile, a CV, an "About" page, a press kit or a series for your social media. Choose a photographer whose portraits look like the result you want, then agree with them on the crops, the background, the retouching, the images delivered and the permitted uses.
Individual headshot, personal branding or team
The same words cover three needs, and each is prepared differently.
The individual headshot
A simple portrait, framed on the face and shoulders, for a profile, a CV or a signature. What matters is likeness, expression and a background that does not distract. One or a few finished images are often enough.
Personal branding
A more varied series for a freelancer, a consultant or a founder: several crops, different outfits, images at work or in a place that tells the story of your activity. It feeds a website, social media or a presentation, and calls for more preparation and retouching.
Portraits of a team
To photograph several colleagues with a consistent look, or a staff directory, see corporate photographers: scheduling everyone, keeping the series consistent and each person's agreement change the order. If your portrait serves a creative intention rather than a professional use, see artistic portrait photographers.
Choosing a photographer by their portraits
Judge a photographer on series close to your need: individual portraits if you want a profile picture, varied series if you are preparing personal branding.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a professional portrait session last?
It depends on the number of outfits, places and crops. A profile portrait takes less time than a personal branding series; the photographer states the planned length in their offer.
When will I receive the photos?
On the date agreed with the photographer. Selection and retouching take time after the session: have the delivery time written into the quote.
Studio, office or outdoors?
A studio gives a plain background and controlled light. Your premises or an outdoor setting add context. Choose according to the uses, and ask the photographer for examples in each setting.
do people look at ease, even those who rarely pose?
Light
does the result, in a studio or in natural light, match the image you want to give?
Backgrounds
do they offer a plain background, an office setting, outdoors, or several?
Retouching
do skin and colour stay natural from one image to the next?
Consistency
is their style stable, if you want to add to the series later?
Preparing your portrait brief
The brief lets the photographer propose a suitable offer. A few lines are enough, as long as they cover uses, crops, background, retouching and delivery.
Uses and formats
List where the image will be used: LinkedIn profile, CV, website, signature, press, print. Each use may need a different crop, square, portrait or landscape, and some space around the face so it can be recropped.
Background and place
A studio gives a plain background and steady light. Your premises or an outdoor setting add context, but you need to check access, noise and permission to use the place. Say whether the background must match existing portraits.
Outfit and preparation
Bring two outfits if you are unsure, without busy patterns, and ask the photographer what works with their background and light. Tell them the image you want to give: serious, approachable, creative.
Retouching
State the level you expect: light and colour corrections, softening of temporary blemishes or more advanced work. The result should stay faithful, and retouching time changes the quote.
Session length and delivery time
How long the session lasts depends on the number of outfits, places and crops. Delivery time is a separate question: it depends on selection and retouching, and is agreed with the photographer. Have both written into the quote.
Ask the quote to state: session length, location or studio, number of outfits and crops, number of finished images, level of retouching, formats delivered, delivery time and permitted uses.
Sample brief: a portrait for a profile and a website
It is a fictional example to adapt, not a client case or a standard package.
Person
a freelance consultant updating her professional profile and the "About" page of her website.
Uses
LinkedIn profile, "About" page, email signature and presentation deck.
Crops
a tight portrait for the profile, a wider shot with space beside her for a website banner.
Background
a light plain background in a studio, and a few images at her desk if time allows.
Outfits
two outfits, one more formal, one more relaxed.
Retouching
natural, with light and colour evened out, without changing her features.
Deliverables
a selection of finished images in the formats requested. Number and timing to be stated in the quote.
Publication
the photographer may publish one image chosen together in their portfolio; no other use without agreement.
If you add a second place or images at work, list it as an extra request so offers can be compared on the same scope.
Rights and publication of the images
The photographer remains the author of the images. The permitted uses, profile, website, press, print or advertising, are those set out in the contract. If the portrait will serve a campaign or be used by a company, say so before the quote. The photographer can attach to the contract an assignment of rights that sets out the purposes, media, territory and duration: you sign it with the contract.
On your side, publication of your portrait by the photographer needs your agreement, which does not follow from having been photographed: Service Public explains image rights (in French).
Comparing offers and booking
The price of a professional portrait varies with length, place, number of outfits, retouching, images delivered and uses. To compare two photographers, send them the same brief.
Before booking, check:
the uses and formats requested;
the session length, place and background;
the number of finished images and the level of retouching;
the agreed delivery time;
the permitted uses and the publication terms.
Enter the city and date in the search, or browse the cities listed below. On a photographer's profile, look through their series and packages, at a fixed price or on quote, and send them a message to share your brief. Then choose the package closest to your need, the date, time and place, and say who is billed: yourself, or "My business" so that its legal name and SIRET appear on the contract and the invoice. Add your brief to the booking request message. If they accept, the photographer sends you a contract drawn up from the booking, which you sign online before they do. Graindevue does not use price as a ranking criterion.
Can I use my portrait for my company?
Yes, if that use is set out in the contract. List the media and the users, you or your company, before the quote.
Do I need a corporate photographer for my team?
For several colleagues with a consistent look, yes: a corporate photographer organises the schedule and keeps the series consistent. For a single portrait, a professional portrait photographer is enough.
